I ran a CarProof on the high mileage (240k km) E39 M5 I was interested in. Take a look at the damage history and tell me what you think ....

Kinja'd!!!

The car’s had 4 owners.

Kinja'd!!!

And two accident events. The one in 2004 worries me. Should I go check the car out in person and get a BMW PPI? Or is it not worth the effort?

What makes this strange is that the owner says the car has a clean title. And the car has been running for 14 years, despite that incident in 2004?

Being totaled when it was that young is concerning, I would want to see what the damage was, and I don’t imagine pictures of that would be around

Plausible deniability. At best.

2004 was 14 years ago. I’d be more put off by the milage. The engine likely needs attentionmore than a long done and dusted repair.

What’s the asking price? I’d it’s over $16k (USD) I’d pass.

Yeah. I mean there’s been no reported accident while this guy owned the car. Yet, the car is priced low.

So either he knows about the car’s history or there’s something else that’s fucky with it.

Asking $14k CAD.

Keep in mind, there are only 4 or 5 E39 M5s for sale in Canada right now. None of them are priced below $20k CAD.

That’s a lot of miles - based on the maintenance my friend’s needed between 60k and 140k when he sold it, by this point it’s either going to bankrupt you or be 10k miles away from it, not to mention apparently having apparently been junked or totaled in 2004 (The $1800 claim in 2010 is a low enough value that it very well could have been someone cracked the bumper in a parking lot). I’d keep looking - these are awesome cars, but you’re going to want one in good shape if you want to be able to enjoy it.

I’d avoid it entirely based on the first incident. Looking at the pic you can even tell that the front end is painted.

You’re right on the avoid.

You already know my answer.

I have had 3-4 E39 540i’s and can tell you all you need to know about retrofitting Bluetooth and getting the pixelated displays repaired. oppo@noops.org if you pull the trigger. Or send me the listing at least and I’ll see if I can spot anything else that causes concern.

Airplanes have major work done all the time. Bird strikes are especially bad. Good workmanship on the repairs is what matters. I think all you’re getting is a documented repair versus the one you didn’t know about.

So he’s either blatantly lying, or actually has no idea and the car someone has a clean title after being totaled...weird
